Troy Baker is one of the biggest icons in the gaming industry and no stranger to the spotlight. Despite this, his casting as Indiana Jones in the upcoming gameIndiana Jones and the Great Circlealmost didn’t happen. Bethesda’s Todd Howard wasn’t convinced Baker was the right fit.

Much like the world of film, casting is pivotal to a project’s success in the world of video games. But after an exhaustive audition process, Baker proved to be the best choice. Howard has admitted now that his doubts were misplaced, fully embracing Baker’s performance.

Todd Howard didn’t doubt Baker’s abilities but his skepticism was instead from how well-known Troy Baker was in the gaming world. Known for iconic roles such as Joel inThe Last of Usand Booker DeWitt inBioShock Infinite, Baker’s voice is instantly recognizable.
Speaking toGQandRolling Stone, Howard talked about how he feared that Baker would be too recognizable. The casting process was grueling. MachineGames, the Swedish developer behindThe Great Circle, conducted blind taste tests comparing actors’ performances.

Baker’s delivery consistently outshone his competitors. Howard ultimately confessed to Baker and admitted his initial doubts were misplaced.

Baker’s role as Indiana Jones is no small feat. Stepping into the shoes of Harrison Ford, the actor who immortalized the character, required more than just voice work.

Despite its high expectations,The Great Circlealmost didn’t happen. Todd Howard first pitched anIndiana Jonesgame to LucasArts in 2009, but negotiations fell apart due to disputes over publishing rights. 15 years later,The Great Circleis a dream come true for both Howard and Bethesda.

While he’s set to return for Neil Druckmann’s next project at Naughty Dog, Baker is also exploring new avenues, including performance directing.
