Only receiving its reveal last week at GDC 2019, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 has gotten some more details in terms of story progress.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 will not feature Day and Night Cycle

The newly announced sequel to the 2004Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlinesby developer Paradox Interactive and Harsuit Labs, Bloodlines 2 will focus on a new city, a story based in Seattle. While RPGs mostly depict their storylines with a day and night cycle, Bloodlines 2 will not have this feature.

In an article byDualshockers, they asked Creative Director Martin Ka’ai Cluney about how the narrative will progress in Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2. Although time will progress throughout the story, it will not go from day to night:

PlayStation 4

In terms of a day/night cycle, we just didn’t want to get into it. We didn’t feel like there was enough benefit to actually supporting it. You’re always there at night, you may’t do anything in the day.

The explanation of this seems to make sense as the story revolves around vampires who only come out at night. This has been seen in other vampire focused games such as the recent action-RPGVampyrwhich also progressed its storyline only during the night. As this is a staple in a lot of vampire lore, this decision seems pretty logical and reinforced by Cluney who shared “effectively [its] always 1:30 in the morning.”

PC

In this title you will have the option to go to sleep, but the fun doesn’t stop while you’re resting:

We do have ways to push you through the story. You can go to sleep…and sometimes things will happen while you’re sleeping. Other times, you’ll need to sleep, vampires need rest too.

From this it looks like the game will focus on a natural progression of the story but will also continue to evolve while your character sleeps to help the flow of the game.

In recent interview withPolygon, Cluney also shared the premise behind the sequel, saying that while “it’s totally fine if players stream the game” but this isn’t the main draw for them:

…Bloodlines 2 is a game about players making their own choices, imagining their own backstory, and taking their own path.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2will release on Playstation 4, PC and Xbox One in Q1 2020.
