Path Of Exile: The Challenges of Handling Two Major Projects
Managing the development of two live-service games like Path of Exile and Path of Exile 2 simultaneously is no easy task, as Grinding Gear Games is learning the hard way. The studio has had to put an update for the original game on hold due to emerging priorities with its sequel.
To provide some context,Path of Exileis a free-to-play action RPG in the style of Diablo that has been running for over a decade. Grinding Gear Games had promised to continue updating it even after the release of Path of Exile 2, which launched as an Early Access title.
However, Path of Exile’s 3.26 update was originally set to release in late October, before being pushed to mid-February of this year. Now, it has been delayed once again until version 0.2.0 of Path of Exile 2 is released, as the studio needs to address critical issues with the sequel.
Jonathan Rogers, co-founder of Grinding Gear Games, released a video statement explaining that the delay occurred because the Path of Exile team was reassigned to work onPath of Exile 2in order to meet the sequel’s Early Access launch deadline.
Although they initially hoped the first game’s team would return to their usual tasks in time for the February update, this ultimately proved impossible due to the numerous problems plaguing the sequel since its release.
“We were fooling ourselves,” Rogers admitted. “Unfortunately, I can’t promise a release date right now. I’m truly sorry for everything that has happened. We still have a lot to learn about managing two games at once. We were overly confident. I need to figure out how to structure our studio to make this work.”
