The last few years have seen many animatedStar Warscharacters making a debut in live action shows likeThe MandalorianandThe Book of Boba Fett. Although this has led many fans of the franchise to constantly call for and speculate over who could be next to make the transition. Even though many believe that there is a constant discussion going on behind the scenes over which animated characters to develop next, writer/director/producerDave Filonidebunked the idea when speaking withThe Wrap.

Although the last couple of years have seen the likes of Ahsoka, Cad Bane and more making atransition from their animated appearancesinto live action Disney+ shows, Filoni explained that there is never much time given to thinking about which characters can be brought into the real word. He said:

“Very rarely. I know people think it’s the other way around, which is fascinating to me, but I think there’s two ways to look at that, which is that, yes, they were animated characters, but to me they’re just characters. And now I’m over here working in live-action. I’m comfortable with those characters, I know them, I like them and I like to see them around. [Katee Sackhoff’s] talked about it a little bit, and the difference between performing Bo-Katan as a voice actor versus performing her physically and being present on set as her – it’s a different vibe. I’m always cautious. And Jon [Favreau] and I talk about who will we bring in? I try to do it when it makes the most sense.”

Animated Star Wars Characters Are Only Considered When Needed in Live Action.

While there are many new characters being brought into theStar Warsfranchise, sometimes the perfect character exists already in animated series likeThe Clone Wars, just waiting for the moment they can be of use in another series. Filoni explained how this was the case with Cad Bane’s appearance inThe Book of Boba Fett. He said:

“When we needed a gunslinger to go up against some of our characters in Book of Boba Fett, Cad Bane’s name came up. I think looking at that, the first thing I think is, ‘Well, how do we do that and make it believable?’ Like the character, he’s so lean and gaunt in The Clone Wars. And if we don’t do that, is it all CG? How are we going to portray that? If we don’t think we can do that effectively, then we shouldn’t do it. [I have] been very happy with the ones that have gone over. There may or may not be more in Ahsoka, if that’s your thing.”

Currently, the third season ofThe Mandalorianis rolling out on Disney+, andAhsokawill debut later this year. Filoni’s “will there/won’t there” remarks about the Rosario Dawson-led show gives a strong indication that there will in fact be more animated characters coming to live action, which ties in with previous rumors ofStar Wars: Rebelscharacters Ezra Bridger and Grand Admiral Thrawn making an appearance.
