The good news forTales from the Cryptfans is that producerM. Night Shyamalanmay have changed his mind about making the show a seasonal episodic thriller. He now wants to return to focusing on individual stories, staying in tune with the originalHBOclassic. But the bad news is, this means the upcomingTNT seriesis still in development, and isn’t arriving as soon as we thought.
This latest report comes fromBloody Disgusting, who were the first on the scene with details about the horror anthology. ProducerM. Night Shyamalanis curating a two-hour horror block for TNT, which will include new Tales from the Crypt episodes. Back in January, the show was said to be following the current trend of episodic seasonal horror series, where one story is told over the course of a single season, much likeAmerican Horror Story,ScreamandScream Queens. It was also revealed that the show was ditching the classicCrypt Keeperbecause HBO still owned the rights to the puppet. Instead, the new show will introduce a completely rebooted Crypt Keeper.
The first 13 episodes of the Tales from the Crypt reboot were reportedly set in New Orleans and revolved around avoodooplot. That apparently has been scraped. Now,M. Night Shyamalanwants to have standalone episodes that don’t directly tie into one another. He explains.
“You know, I can’t say 100% but I’m thinking right now, where I am, if you’d asked me this six months ago I would have a different answer, but where I am right now it’s more individual ‘Black Mirror’ kind of stuff right now.”
M. Night Shyamalandid, once again, also reconfirm that the show will revolve around a new Crypt Keeper. But each week, he will now be introducing individual short stories that are more in tune with the original comics and HBO series. They will also carry the same edge as the popular British anthology horror seriesBlack Mirror, which looks at the effects of modern technology on society. That show was renewed last year for new episodes on Netflix.Black Mirroris considerably a lot more visceral and hardcore than the original Tales from the Crypt. We can expect that this new reboot will keep pace with what modern audiences are seeking in their horror entertainment. But, airing on TNT, it probably won’t go so gleefully over the top.
Bloody Disgustingreports that the original Tales from the Crypt reboot screenplay for the first season, which revolves around voodoo, has been completed and floating around Hollywood for more than a year. Which meansM. Night Shyamalanis likely restarting this all from scratch. Which means it might be a while before we actually see the first episode. What do you think? Is this the better way to go? Or were you exciting about one interconnected storyline as opposed to individual episodes? Sound off in the comment section below.
