Earlier this week,Starfield’s first update of 2024 was released in Steam Beta. The patch included a plethora of bug fixes and graphical improvements, and players are now discovering the included lighting overhaul was pretty drastic.
Over on the Starfield subreddit, userTERAB1Tshowed a side-by-side comparison of the same Starfield NPC before and after the new beta update. The difference is night and day, literally. On the left-hand side of the video is the NPC in version 1.8.88, with lighting so bad that it’s as if a spotlight is directly above their head. Then, on the right-hand side of the video is the 1.9.47 beta update, which showcases much more natural lighting on the NPC.

Starfield Players Call For Bethesda To Remove “Cartoonishly Bad” Environmental Hazards
The discussion around Starfield’s environmental hazards has been reignited, as players think they need to be removed or, at least, reworked.
The change is impressive and highly needed, but some believe there’s still some work to be done. “It still flickers now and then, but on the whole the lighting is much better. Less of that spotlight effect. Caves still suck,” Reddit userWildOscar66said. Whilst another Reddit user by the name ofRutabagaEfficientsaid, “They need to completely take out the nasty filter that makes everything more bland.”

What’s New In Starfield’s 1.9.47 Update?
To be more specific regarding the lighting changes, the official patch notes include the following fixes:
As for everything else new in the update, there’s a pretty long list. Sadly, no new content for players to check out this time, but there are plenty of bug fixes that should make your time amongst the stars more enjoyable. There are fixes and improvements to animations, creatures and enemies, crew and companions, graphics, outposts, powers, quests, ships, skills, weapons, and some general fixes. Check out the full list over on theBethesda websiteto find out more.

Currently, the update is only available in Beta on Steam. Xbox users will need to wait until the end of the month to check out the update when it receives an official launch.
