To get the Prisoner, take the knife when you first come down, but drop it and free the Princess, then resist the Narrator trying to make you do otherwise.

Chapter two: The Prisoner walkthrough
The cabin is now much more like a proper prison. This is the only chapter where you’re forced to take the knife. For this chapter, the outcomes are as follows:
Note that the Prisoner’s head and The Prisoner count as separate vessels for The Shifting Mound. You have to do this twice to deliver both.
Chapter three: The Grey
There is nothing you’re able to do in this chapter to change the outcome. You’ll drown at the end of it no matter what, and then The Shifting Mound takes the Princess.
