The Secret Life of Petswill go up against the Universal Pictures comedyMike and Dave Need Wedding Dateswhen it hits theaters nationwide on July 8. While it doesn’t have much direct competition, this animated comedy is sandwiched between a number of high-profile projects. Opening one week earlier on July 1 isThe BFG,The Legend of TarzanandThe Purge 3, whileGhostbusters,La La Landand The Lake open on July 15.

This comedy could very well be the latest in a long line of hit movies from Illumination, but given its stiff competition, it certainly may not fare as well as hits likeDespicable MeandDespicable Me 2andMinions.
