In a recent interview with Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa, he shared his thoughts on Cloud Gaming and the future of dedicated consoles.
Nintendo President Shares Focusing Entirely on Dedicated Consoles is Pointless
While Nintendo Switch has been making waves with its versatile on-the-game and home console feature, president of Nintendo Shuntaro Furakawa recently shared insight on the future of consoles. In an interview with Nikkei which was translated by Nintendo Everything, Furakawa shared that cloud gaming could be the main focus of gaming in about decades time, but current consoles aren’t going anywhere for now. However he did warn that focusing purely on dedicated hardware would not be wise:
It would be pointless to solely focus on methods of play that can only be had on dedicated hardware.

Recently former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime also shared similar sentiment about cloud gaming, saying that “as the technology evolves to be cloud, and as download speeds increase, what it means is you’re going to be able to play any game on any device at any time”. He also gave a the same time frame of in the next 10 years, so nothing in the near future.
Cloud gaming isn’t something new to Nintendo as previously in Japan they’ve already had games launch on their cloud service such asAssassin’s Creed OdysseyandResident Evil 7, but was exclusive to Japan alone. This looks to be a way to test out the technology in a select region, but since this service didn’t extend beyond that, they may not be ready for an international release.
While Nintendo can be deemed a little old school in what they offer, they seem to be taking the future of gaming seriously. With other platforms such asxCloudon the horizon and the already releasedStadia, there will be plenty of choice when it comes to cloud gaming.
