Trainspottingis 20 years old. Usually making a sequel two decades after the fact is death to the franchise, much likeZoolander 2earlier this year. ButTrainspotting 2looks like it could be one of those rare sequels worth waiting that long for. Now, we have a brand new international trailer that shows off a ton of new footage.
We have already seen a couple oftrailersalready forT2 Trainspotting, but this new international trailer recently made its way ontoYouTube, giving us even more reason to think thatDanny Boylewill be doing right by fans this time around.Danny Boylehas had a tremendous career since directing the firstTrainspotting, but he has never directed a sequel. He did have a hand in28 Weeks Later, but didn’t wind up directing it. So, we have to imagine he felt there was a good reason to finally make a sequel this late in his career. Here is the official synopsis for the movie.
“First there was an opportunity……then there was a betrayal. Twenty years have gone by. Much has changed but just as much remains the same.Mark Renton(Ewan McGregor) returns to the only place he can ever call home. They are waiting for him: Spud (Ewen Bremner), Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), and Begbie (Robert Carlyle). Other old friends are waiting too: sorrow, loss, joy, vengeance, hatred, friendship, love, longing, fear, regret, diamorphine, self-destruction and mortal danger, they are all lined up to welcome him, ready to join the dance.”
Trainspotting 2is based on authorIrvine Welsh’s follow-up novel toTrainspottingtitledPorno.Danny Boyledecided against that title for a few reasons, but it is good to know that there is source material from the creator of these characters to draw from. Not only that, but the entire, central cast from the original movie (who made it out alive) are returning for the sequel, which definitely lends even more credibility to the project.Ewan McGregoris back as Renton,Ewen Bremneras Spud,Johnny Lee Milleras Sick Boy andRobert Carlyleas Begbie.
Trainspottingdidn’t make a ton of money at the box office when it was originally released back in 1996. According to Box Office Mojo, the movie brought in a grand total of $16 million. It did have a relatively modest budget, though and has gone on to become a massive cult classic. So, since it seems likeDanny Boylekept things modest again, there is no reason to thinkT2: Trainspotting 2can’t do well enough to justify being made. It doesn’t hurt that critics adore the movie, as it currently carries a very impressive 90 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Sequels are very common practice for Hollywood these days, but more often than not, it is for massive blockbusters, horror movies made on the cheap or comedies that turn a massive profit. Seeing something likeTrainspotting 2get made at all is something different and has the potential to be great. The movie is set for release in the U.K. on June 15, 2025. It will open domestically in limited release onMarch 3, 2017then expand to wide release on March 10. you may check out the newTrainspotting 2international trailer for yourself below.
