Why is Netflix cutting support for older Fire TV devices?

Netflix hasn’t given an official reason as to why it’s ending support for Amazon’s first-generation Fire TV sticks. However, given their age – the first-generation Fire TV devices were released 11 years ago – it’s not entirely surprising. Even Amazon stopped updating them long ago, with the first-generation Fire TV last receiving an update in 2021 (viaAFTV News) and the first-generation Fire TV Stick last being updated in 2022.

The reason for discontinuing support could be hardware-related. For reference, the first-generation Fire TV Stick has a dual-core processor and 1GB of memory. Another possibility, which seems more likely, is that Netflix is using newer audio and video codecs that the first-generation Fire TV devices do not support. AsPCWorldnotes, Netflix is currently using new standards for higher-quality streaming, such as the AV1 codec, and older devices like the first-generation Fire TV devices cannot be updated to support them.
