At one point, not too long ago, directorKevin Smithhad announced his “retirement,” with plans to distribute other independent films not of his making. It didn’t take long for the filmmaker to whip up a new slate of movies for himself to direct, though, with last year’sTuskmarking the start of his Canadian-set saga known as theTrue North Trilogy, which will be followed byYoga Hoserslater this year and capped off byMoose Jawsin 2016. The filmmaker took to hisTwitter pagetoday to break down his upcoming production schedule, revealing that his long-awaited sequelClerks IIIwill start shooting this May, followed byHit Somebodyin September andMoose Jawsin February 2016. After that, the director teased, “I smell a rat,” hinting that a sequel to his sophomore comedyMallratscould be next.

Since this year marks the 20th anniversary ofMallrats, the timing would be right to tease an impending official announcement of the sequel. Released almost exactly one year after his breakout debutClerks,Mallratswas a box office failure, but gained a sizeable cult following after its release on DVD. The comedy marked the feature film debut of then-professional-skateboarderJason Leeas Brody, a perpetual slacker who goes on a quest at his favorite mall with his best friend T.S. (Jeremy London) (Shannen Doherty) as they both attempt to reclaim the women they love.Ben Affleck,Claire Forlani,Joey Lauren Adams, Renée Humphrey,Jason MewesandEthan Supleeco-starred in the comedy, with comic book legendStan Leemaking an appearance as himself.

Of course, it isn’t known ifKevin Smitheven has a script written forMallrats 2, but it should be noted thatJason Lee’s Brody also made an appearance inKevin Smith’s 2001 comedy Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, where he owned his own comic book store.
