Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3was thrown into disarray after director James Gunn was infamously fired for cracking wise about pedophilia, rape, 9/11 and the Holocaust on twitter. Sure, some of these jokes were more than 10 years old, but they didn’t fall in line with Disney’s family friendly vibe, so the filmmaker got the axe. Now,Guardians 3is sitting in limbo as Marvel Studios searches for a new director.
Well,Edgar Wrighthas a pretty good idea. Someone suggested Wright might be the perfect choice to take over the treading Marvel project, also naming fired Han Solo directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller for the job. Edgar Wright has a much better idea, and Chris Miller concurs. In an epic Disney and Marvel troll, Wright suggestions that, perhaps James Gunn might be the best person to take over directorial duties onGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Yes, perhapsJames Gunn, the guy who wrote and directed the first twoGuardians of the Galaxymovies is the only one who should be directingGuardians of the Galaxy 3. But on that note, these sci-fi comedy adventures appeal to very young children, and many believe that James Gunn shouldn’t be directing kiddie movies. you’re able to argue that point all day long, listing the other nefarious weirdos who have gone onto have successful careers in children’s entertainment. But Gunn ain’t coming back.
Disneymade this very clear late last year, after James Gunn met with top brass at Disney Studios to see if he could get his job back. The entire returning cast penned an open letter asking Disney to reconsider. Marvel Studios went to bat for the guy. Some interlopers on the Internet even conned people into forking over money for a giant billboard next to Disneyland that boldly shouted ‘Rehire James Gunn’. All to no avail, and a huge waste of money.
Disney doesn’t want James Gunn back. And that’s their prerogative. This might all work out better in the long run for fans and DC Comics, with James Gunn writingSuicide Squad 2and possibly directing. The guy is better suited to R rated fare, and he might get to create one of DC Comics first R rated superhero movies, unlessJokergets there first. An official rating is still pending on that one.
Edgar Wright is no stranger to the business that goes on behind closed doors at Disney and Marvel. He had worked and strived hard for over a decade to bringAnt-Manto the big screen. He had a falling out with Marvel over creative differences, as his movie wasn’t quite sliding into the MCU mold as requested. Wright wasn’t happy to go. Peyton Reed took over. And both it and its sequelAnt-Man and the Wasphave proven to be modest hits for the juggernaut that is the MCU.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3is still without a director. There are murmurs thatAnchormanandVicedirector Adam McKay, who did rewrites onAnt-Manwith Paul Rudd, could come in and save the day, but that has never been confirmed. There has also been news that Marvel is considering hiring a female director to take over, for whatever that’s worth.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3was supposed to be heading into production here in the next few weeks. With it sidelined, there are even more murmurs that sayBlack Widowis going to fill that slot, with the standalone Scarlett Johansson adventure shooting in February. It will be interesting to see how this works out.
