The death ofDavid Lynchleft an incredible hole in the world of movies and television that seems impossible to fill. What madethe legendary filmmaker’s passingworse is knowing that he was in the process of piecing together one final possible masterpiece at the time. While we will never get to see this realized, Lynch’s collaborator, cinematographer Peter Deming, recently shared an insight into the project that was to be calledUnrecorded Night.
Deming, who collaborated with Lynch onTwin Peaks: The Return, was to reunite with Lynch for what would have probably been one last project for the director, which was reportedly heading to Netflix. Speaking toThe Film Stage, Deming revealed:

“Shortly before he passed – well, like a year, because it was pre-Covid – there wasUnrecorded Night, which he had written. I’d read it, and we actually went on one scout, looking at locations. Then Covid hit, so everything shut down and it never rekindled.
“It’s definitely its own original thing… It was going to be a lot of episodes, because David really liked what he called ‘the continuing story.’…[When we made]Twin Peaks: The Return, we weren’t really sure how many episodes there were going to be until it got into post-production, because it wasn’t really written that way; it was written as a 550-page film. So how that was sliced and diced really was a post-production question.Unrecorded Nightwas the same way. It took me three sittings to read it because it was so thick, but it was definitely notTwin Peaks. It was definitely a really interesting… mystery, I would say.”

David Lynch’s Daughter Unveils His Gravestone - and It Has a Simple but Mysterious Epitaph as You Would Expect
Jennifer Lynch has shared an image of her father’s gravestone and its three-word message, while urging fans to visit when they can.
David Lynch Was Unlike Any Other Filmmaker
There are many directors who earn the title of “legend” throughout their careers, but few are so completely unique in their approach to movie-making that they are in a completely different league. Lynch didn’t make movies, he made worlds where the usual laws didn’t really apply, and there was never any chance that his work could be described as repetitive.
FromTwin PeakstoMulholland Drive, Lynch’s projects didn’t just make audiences want to rewatch them, but made it a necessity if you wanted to discover what they were actually about.Unrecorded Nightcould have been one last journey of discovery along the Lynch highway of the bizarre and mysterious, but unfortunately, we will never get to find out where it would have led.

However, it is hard to feel too disappointed when Lynch left behind such an impressive library of past projects for fans to relive whenever they feel like cinema’s latest offerings are beginning to lose their edge. Several of Lynch’s greatest creations are constantly streaming somewhere, and the entireTwin Peakssaga is currently available on Paramount+ and wasrecently announced to be joining Mubi’s line-up.
