25 years after its original PlayStation release, Breath of Fire 4 is now available to buy on PC’s digital storefrontGOG. The game is the newest title to receive an updated release as part of the partnership betweenCapcomand GOG, which also led to a comeback of the original releases of the first threeResident Eviland the original two Dino Crisis titles.
The Return of the Legendary Capcom RPG
Breath of Fire 4 was originally released on the very first PlayStation back in 2000, and received a PC port back in 2003. Since then, the title has also received a PSOne Classic port for PlayStation 3, PSP and PS Vita in 2011, but no modern systems had any form of playing it natively.

With the new GOG release, it all changed, as players can now enjoy the experience on current PCs with Windows 10 or 11 as their operational systems. The game is also compatible with modern controllers, such as DualSense and DualShock 4, as well as Xbox and Switch controllers.

In the game, after many years of conflict between the western and eastern continents, Princess Elina goes missing. As such, her sister, Nina, and Cray the Woren depart in search of her whereabouts. During their trip, the duo finds a young man called Ryu who knows nothing about himself besides his name.
Ryu has the special skill to turn into a dragon and becomes a trusty companion for Nina in her search. At the same time, the ancient emperor Fou-Lu awakens and tries to get back his rightful throne that he had to leave behind due to specific circumstances of the backstory.

New Additions for Extra Polish in Breath of Fire 4
For the GOG version, there are multiple additions to make it easier to run Breath of Fire 4 on various setups and adjust its features. Along with an improved DirectX renderer, the game now features multiple rendering options. Players can opt for a Windowed Mode, turn the Vertical Synchronization on or off, fix the gamma values, and use anti-aliasing and integer scaling to get the image to look much better at higher resolutions. The companies have also shared a few images of how the game looks in this new release by default:
The audio engine was also improved, so that environmental sounds are no longer missing and players can configure the audio. The original PC release was also prone to crashing in various circumstances, but the game’s page points to these issues being fixed when it comes to battle, combo system, task switching and cutscene scripting.

The new release allows players to pick between English and Japanese text and has improved support for keyboard, mouse and controllers. The Warehouse and Crane minigames have also been improved and players can configure button binding, vibration and hotplugging for their controllers. There are many other minor fixes and GOG shared a video exploring how meaningful this new version is.

With Breath of Fire IV, GOG adds yet another classic game to the belt of theirPreservation Program, which aims to keep them compatible with modern systems even after developers stop supporting them. As part of theDreamlist system, it garnered over 20,000 votes from people who declared their interest in having the game available on GOG.
