Super Smash Bros. is a legendary platform fighting series that has us see gaming characters from all walks of life come together into an epic brawl. What started as a Nintendo love letter turned into a celebration of the industry we all adore inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate.

10 Best Fighting Games for Beginners

The fighting game genre is one of the most vast in gaming. Because of this, however, it can be intimidating to decide which one to start with.

“Ultimate is likely to stay around for a long time to come, as it’s hard to imagine any other Nintendo fighting title topping it for in a good number of years,” saidour review. From Sora to Mario, here are the best Super Smash Bros. characters in terms of gameplay and importance.

The last character to join the legendary roster of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate isKingdom Hearts' Sora. He is a monumental addition as he was the most requested character during Nintendo’s fan ballot for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. you’re able to see him shaking hands with Mario in his trailer, which gave many fans goosebumps.

After rubbing our eyes from what we saw, fans were given a character with all manner of spells at his disposal. Thunder threw down a wave of lightning towards foes, Fire blasted a ball of magma at opponents, and Blizzard froze enemies in place. His air combos are also thrilling to see on screen. He is a fun character to use in-game.

Pikachu in Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Starring in the original Super Smash Bros., Pikachu is an OG rep for the Pokemon series. He is lightning fast with a fantastic neutral attack, a powerful thunderbolt attack that can push opponents out of the arena, and has a great recovery.

Pikachu is significant as he was the main mascot for the Pocket Monsters. It was so cool to see an iconic character such as this fighting Mario, Link, and Samus back in the day.

Joker in Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Joker from Persona 5, bar none, has thebest Super Smash Bros. character reveal of all time. The Phantom Thieves hijacked The Game Awards and gave this unexpected announcement during the show. The trailer was in the Persona 5 art style we know and love too.

Regardless of the incredible trailer, Joker is a stellar choice in the roster of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He’s quick on his feet, can deal magic that dishes out damage over time, and can use his Persona to knock out his opponents in a snap. The music and stage he brings to the game is also phenomenal. There’s even a remix of the stellar theme, “Aria of the Soul.”

Yoshi in Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Different Persona songs being played during a battle of Momentos changes the victory theme for Joker in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which is a cool touch.

Another OG Smash Bros. character from the Nintendo 64 era is Yoshi. Like Pikachu, this dinosaur has an excellent air game and can keep his opponents guessing. His neutral air is excellent as it’s extremely fast and the down-B reigns down his heavy weight into opponents.

Bayonetta in Super Smash Bros for Wii U

Yoshi is a unique character as he can use his tongue to suck up opponents and turn them into eggs. This can be used as a way to fool an opponent and have them lose a stock from one side of the arena. Don’t underestimate Yoshi, especially while I’m playing as him. You’ve been warned.

6Sephiroth

If a Super Smash Bros. player wants to embrace their dark side,Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VIIis an excellent choice. Ultimate did a great job of introducing more villains to the roster, and Sephiroth is one of the best. His long sword can crush his enemies and his fireball move can demolish the HP and stocks of anyone who comes across it.

The Game Awards trailer that Sephiroth featured in, is incredible, as he sliced one of the World of Light’s bosses in just one slash of his sword. He also has an epic fight with Cloud, including a gag that Mario was stabbed (but only had the sword slip through his clothes instead). Thetrailerhas been viewed millions of times.

5Bayonetta

During the Wii U era, Bayonetta was one of the best characters in the game, period. Her abilities in the air and counter attack were second-to-none and took out many who challenged her. She was overused in the competitive scene back then, and while she has been nerfed, she is still a thrilling character to play as.

Her combos are so fun to pull off, and her gestures, especially when she lies on the ground, don’t shy away from her more risqué actions in the Bayonetta series. The Final Smash Infernal Climax also looks epic on screen as she calls the power of a huge monster to finish off her victims.

Sonic is a monumental character in video game history, and when Super Smash Bros. Brawl released, it was incredible to see Nintendo’s greatest rival in the past fight Mario, Link, and others. His moveset is fun to utilize as he spin dashes across the stage and strikes opponents with his fists blazingly quick. His taunts are top-tier too.

His stage Green Hill Zone is also beautiful, especially for me as it was the first level I’ve experienced in a video game. You also can’t beat the music he brought into the Super Smash Bros. series. Fighting characters like Ganondorf, Bowser, and Pit to “Live and Learn” is amazing, still to this day.

Featuring in the first Super Smash Bros, this iconic Nintendo character has been brawling since the very beginning. He is so fun to use as he juggles enemies in the air and slams his fist down for a satisfying spike. He is one of the main characters in the Subspace Emissary mode as he joins forces with the likes of Pit to save Peach and other characters from the Subspace Army and villains like Bowser. His final smash is also striking as he unleashes a wave of furious fire towards his foes.

This is the character that introduced many of us to the now beloved RPG series Fire Emblem, when we playedSuper Smash Bros. Melee. He is a fast sword-based fighter that has incredible combo potential and a fast blitz of slashing attacks as the side-B.

His poking potential with the sword is also legendary among competitive players. He is also exceptionally fast. Lucina seems to be the better pick in Ultimate, according to fans onReddit, but Marth was a fiend during the Melee era with many players choosing him over Roy.

Whenever I’m impressed by some Super Smash Bros. Melee players, it’s usually because they’re using Fox. He’s incredibly fast across the screen as he lays into air combos and other impressive feats. His blaster (neutral B) is blazingly quick and his dash attack is effective at keeping foes away.

While I cannot keep up with how quick the character is, many have mastered his moveset and have proven why he’s so useful in the competitive scene. His final smash in Super Smash Bros. Brawl is incredible as he summons a tank called the Landmaster and decimates foes with its powerful weaponry.
